Setting up your direct deposit automatically |
It's easy to set up direct deposit to your Acorns Checking account — you can do it right from the app or by submitting some paperwork to your employer (we'll help you with the paperwork!).
Direct deposit is a way for funds to be electronically transferred into your checking account, instead of using a paper check. It can be a helpful way to automate your saving and investing — here's how to get started.
Setting up your direct deposit automatically
You can set up direct deposit right from your Acorns Checking account by connecting directly to your payroll provider.
Here's how:
- Log in to your account from your Acorns app or acorns.com
- Tap or click "Checking"
- Tap or click the gear icon in the top right corner to access your settings
- Select "Set up direct deposit" and confirm your selection by tapping on "Set up direct deposit"
- From here, you'll continue with our partner Pinwheel to connect to your employer/payroll provider and set up your direct deposit to your Acorns Checking account, without having to leave the app.
Setting up direct deposit through your employer
If your employer/payroll provider doesn't show up on the search list with our partner Pinwheel, there are two other options you have to set up direct deposit. You can learn more about our partner Pinwheel here.
Download a direct deposit form
You can set up direct deposit manually from your Acorns Checking account — you'll enter your paycheck information in a direct deposit form that you can then submit to your HR or payroll department.
Here's how to get the direct deposit form — we recommend you follow these steps through your Acorns app:
- Log in to your account from your Acorns app
- Tap "Checking"
- Tap the gear icon in the top right corner to access your settings
- Select "Set up direct deposit" and tap “Set up direct deposit” again
- Agree to the terms and conditions
- When Pinwheel pops up, tap on the 'X' in the upper right-hand corner to exit
- You will be asked, "Are you sure you want to exit?" Tap "Return to Acorns"
- Tap "Set up manually" and then enter your paycheck information. You'll be able to download the completed form and/or email it to yourself.
Submit the completed form to your HR or payroll department to set up your direct deposit into your Acorns Checking account. It can take 1-2 payroll cycles for changes to take effect, so make sure to follow up with your HR or payroll department to check on the progress of your request.
Share your Acorns Checking details with your HR or payroll department
You can also set up a direct deposit through your HR or payroll department. Here's the info you'll need to have ready to share with them:
- Your name: Please provide your full legal name on file with your Acorns Checking account.
- Account type: If you’re asked to choose between savings and checking, please choose checking.
- Your account number and routing number for your Acorns Checking account: Here's how to find your account and routing number.
-
Your Acorns Checking partner bank name: We've partnered with two different banks to bring you your Acorns Checking account: nbkc and Lincoln Savings Bank. To figure out which one your account is connected with, check your Acorns debit card — you can find the name of the partner bank on the back of your card. If you don’t have your card handy, here's how to tell which bank your account is associated with:
- Your partner bank is nbkc if you have a Mighty Oak Card account, or if you opened your Acorns Checking account after August 2022.
- Your partner bank is Lincoln Savings Bank if you opened your Acorns Checking account before August 2022. If you're still not sure, please contact us.
Editing your direct deposit settings
Once you've set up your direct deposit, you can edit your direct deposit settings to make it even easier to save and invest.
Using our Paycheck split feature, you can set your direct deposit up to automatically contribute money to your Invest, Later, or Early accounts (or all three!). How much you want to contribute to each account is your choice — this is an easy way to make sure you're "paying yourself first" by saving and investing first thing with each paycheck. You can change your settings any time.
Here's how to choose how much of each paycheck you want to distribute to each of your accounts:
- Log in to your account from your Acorns app or acorns.com
- Tap or click "Checking"
- Tap "Direct deposit" to edit your Paycheck split settings
- Once you've saved those settings, Paycheck split will automatically use them the next time you are paid
If you want to remove your paycheck from Acorns Checking entirely, you'll need to contact your employer to make this update or sign in to your payroll provider portal directly to link a new bank.
