Where does the money for Round-Ups® come from?

Round-Ups® are transferred from your primary checking account that you link to Acorns. Even if you link multiple credit or debit cards to your Round-Ups®, the money that gets invested in your Invest account will come from that main checking account. The primary checking account is also the account that funds are sent back to when you make a withdrawal.

Let’s say you spend $3.50 using your credit card. We'll round that transaction up to $4.00, and keep track of that $0.50 in spare change for you. Once all your spare change adds up to at least $5, we'll transfer that investment from your primary checking account to your Acorns Invest account. Here's how to see which account you have linked as your primary checking account::

From your Acorns app:

  1. After logging in to your account, tap the profile icon in the top left corner of the screen
  2. Tap "Settings"
  3. Tap "Linked Accounts"
  4. You'll see "Primary checking" next to the account

From acorns.com:

  1. After logging in to your account, click "Profile & Settings" in the bottom left corner of the screen
  2. Under "Personal Settings," click "Linked Accounts"
  3. You'll see "Primary checking" next to the account

Heads up: Round-Ups® can be a great way to invest your spare change in the background of life, but it's important to make sure you have enough money in your linked accounts to cover your investing.

If you don't keep enough money in your primary checking account, you could end up with overdraft fees from your bank.

If this is something you're concerned about, you could consider turning off automatic Round-Ups® and reviewing them manually instead. Here's more information on the difference between automatic and manual Round-Ups®.
