What information does Acorns need?

For each Acorns account, you'll need to provide a Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). You’re only able to open one Acorns account per SSN or ITIN.

The one exception is Acorns Early Invest accounts. When beneficiaries reach the age of transfer, they'll be able to open their own Acorns accounts with the same SSN used for their Acorns Early Invest accounts.

Heads up: while you can use an ITIN to open an Acorns Invest or Later account, you might not be able to use an ITIN to open an Acorns Checking account. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Why does Acorns need my SSN or ITIN?

Acorns makes protecting your data, privacy, and assets a top priority. To confirm your identity, we verify your SSN or ITIN when you're setting up your account.

This information is also important when it comes to taxes — we need to know your SSN or ITIN to be able to send you the right tax forms. You can learn more about any taxes you may pay on money you make through your Acorns account here.

I'm having issues signing up

If you are having issues with your SSN during the sign-up process, please check to see if you've already created an account with Acorns in the past.

If you have already created an Acorns account, you'll need to reopen the old account, rather than open a new account. If you can remember the email address you used for the pre-existing Acorns account, log in and reset the password if needed. Then, follow the prompts to reopen your account. Here's more information on how to reopen your account.

But if you're confident you haven't created an account with Acorns in the past and you're having issues with your SSN during registration, please contact us.
